Description

StellarClean Powdered Brewery Wash (PBW) is a buffered alkaline cleaner formulated specifically for brewery equipment — an effective, non-caustic alternative to caustic soda cleaners that’s safe on soft metals, skin-friendly, and biodegradable. The 1kg tub with 10g measuring scoop is enough for dozens of equipment cleans, covering fermenters, kegs, kettles, transfers lines, and the small hardware (airlocks, stoppers, caps) that accumulates organic soil from beer, wort, and yeast. StellarClean is effective at removing protein deposits, hop residue, and yeast cake without the aggressive chemical hazard of caustic-based cleaners. Note: this product is available for click-and-collect only, or freight arranged by the buyer — it cannot be shipped via Australia Post.

Why PBW-Style Cleaners Work Better Than Dish Soap

Household dish soap is the wrong tool for brewery cleaning — it’s formulated to cut grease, not protein and polyphenol deposits, and it leaves surfactant residues that destroy beer head and introduce off-flavours. StellarClean’s alkaline buffered formulation attacks the specific soils that accumulate in brewing equipment: hop resins, wort proteins, yeast biofilm, and the mineral scale that builds up in kettles and fermenters over time. At 40–60°C soak temperature, these deposits soften and detach without aggressive scrubbing — which matters for soft-metal equipment like aluminium kettles or equipment with internal geometry that’s hard to brush-clean. The buffer system keeps the pH stable throughout the cleaning cycle, preventing the ph spikes that can damage aluminium, silicone, and soft rubber seals.

Cleaning vs Sanitising — Getting It Right

StellarClean is a cleaner, not a sanitiser. The correct sequence for all brewing equipment is: clean first with StellarClean to remove organic soil, rinse thoroughly with water, then sanitise with an appropriate no-rinse sanitiser (Star San or equivalent) immediately before use. Skipping the cleaning step and relying on sanitiser alone fails because sanitisers cannot penetrate the biofilm and organic material that builds up on equipment after use — they only kill microorganisms on clean surfaces. Similarly, StellarClean does not kill microorganisms reliably enough to be used as a sole sanitiser. Clean and sanitise are two distinct steps that together produce contamination-free equipment.

Equipment Coverage for Australian Home Brewing Setups

A 1kg tub at a typical dose of 10g per 4–5L of water provides approximately 100 cleaning cycles — enough for a brewer doing 1–2 batches per week to have several months of supply. StellarClean handles the full range of home brewing equipment: boiling kettles (especially aluminium where caustic cleaners are unsafe), stainless fermenters and kegs, plastic buckets and fermenters, RAPT Pill hydrometer cleaning between batches, transfer tubing, and the kettle accessories used with processes like whirlpooling. For heavily soiled equipment — old yeast cake, burnt-on wort from boilovers — an overnight soak at 50°C concentration is more effective than a short soak, and often eliminates the need to scrub.

Works Well With

  • Whirlfloc Tablets — use StellarClean to clean the kettle; then use Whirlfloc in the boil for a clear wort going into a clean fermentor
  • RAPT Pill Yellow — soak the Pill between batches in a dilute StellarClean solution for thorough sensor cleaning
  • RAPT WiFi Temperature Controller — keep probes and equipment clean; StellarClean handles the organic buildup on fermentation hardware
  • Carbonation Drops — clean your bottles with StellarClean between uses for contamination-free bottle conditioning
