Description

Mangrove Jack’s M84 Bohemian Lager is the traditional bottom-fermenting yeast in the MJ range, selected from the classic Czech and Central European brewing tradition for producing the soft, balanced, and delicately complex lagers that define the Bohemian school. Hop bitterness is crisp and clean, the malt character is full but never heavy, and the finish is dry — exactly as a Bohemian Pilsner or a well-crafted bock should pour.

Parameter Range
Fermentation Temperature 8–14°C
Apparent Attenuation 72–76%
Flocculation Medium–High
Alcohol Tolerance ~9% ABV
Format 10 g sachet

Brewing Notes

M84 requires genuine cold fermentation — 8–12°C primary gives the cleanest result with maximum sulphur scrubbing and minimum ester production. Pitch with adequate yeast (rehydrate the full 10 g sachet for a standard 23 L batch at 1.050; double-pitch for higher-gravity lagers) and oxygenate the wort thoroughly — cold wort absorbs oxygen more slowly than warm wort. After primary, lager at 2–5°C for a minimum of four weeks and preferably six to eight; the extended cold conditioning period rounds out any residual sharpness and promotes brilliant clarity. Bohemian Pilsner authenticity demands soft, low-mineral water — keep sulphate below 30 ppm and chloride moderate to allow the Saaz character to shine without harshness.

Beer Styles & Brewing Tips

  • Bohemian Pilsner & Czech Pale Lager — M84’s signature application; an all-Pilsner malt grist, soft water, and 30+ IBU of Saaz produces the real thing.
  • Munich Helles — lower hopping rate, slightly more malt sweetness, same soft water profile; M84 delivers the round, delicate Helles body.
  • Märzen / Oktoberfest — Vienna and Munich malts at a higher OG (1.054–1.060) with M84 create a rich, toasty amber lager for the season.
  • Bock & Dunkelbock — M84 handles moderate gravity well; a single-decoction mash with a mix of Munich and melanoidin malts produces a genuine Bock character.

In the Glass: Crystal-clear golden lager with a persistent white head. Soft malt sweetness leads on the nose, followed by the herbal, slightly spicy Saaz bitterness the style is famous for. The palate is clean, rounded, and refreshing — dry on the finish without any distracting ester or sulphur notes when properly fermented and lagered.
