Description
Mangrove Jack’s M42 New World Strong Ale is purpose-built for high-gravity brewing. With a neutral, unobtrusive aroma profile and an alcohol tolerance that reaches 12% ABV, M42 stays vigorous and clean where many strains would struggle or throw off-flavours — making it the go-to choice for double IPAs, robust porters, and Russian Imperial Stouts that push confidently into double-digit territory.

Brewing Notes
For high-gravity worts, proper yeast nutrition is critical — supplement with yeast nutrient if your OG exceeds 1.080, and oxygenate thoroughly before pitching. M42’s medium flocculation keeps it in suspension longer than high-flocculation strains, which supports complete attenuation in thick, dextrin-heavy worts. Ferment at 16–18°C for the cleanest result in IPAs; stepping up to 20–22°C in darker, maltier styles allows a touch more ester development that complements roast and caramel complexity. Staggered sugar additions (adding adjuncts mid-ferment) can push M42 toward its 12% tolerance without stalling.
Beer Styles & Brewing Tips
- Double IPA & Imperial IPA — M42’s neutral profile disappears behind dry-hop additions; push OG to 1.080–1.090 with confidence.
- Robust Porter & Imperial Porter — high alcohol tolerance, medium body, and clean fermentation suit strong, complex dark ales.
- Russian Imperial Stout — the definitive showcase for M42’s alcohol tolerance and clean profile in an intensely flavoured, full-bodied beer.
- American Barleywine — medium flocculation and sustained fermentation activity work well for the extended, slow ferments required by very high-gravity worts.
In the Glass: Expression varies entirely by recipe — M42 stays in the background. Expect exactly what your hops, malts, and adjuncts say, delivered cleanly at whatever ABV you’ve targeted. That’s the point.

Recommended Hops for This Yeast
M42’s neutral base makes it the ideal vehicle for bold, assertive hop additions in high-gravity styles — the yeast won’t fight your hops for aromatic space.
- Cascade — grapefruit and floral citrus; reliable dual-purpose hop for American strong ales and imperial pales
- Simcoe — pine and tropical fruit; powerful bittering and dry-hop presence in double IPAs
- Amarillo — tangerine and orange blossom; softens the bitterness edge in imperial styles with its rounded citrus character
- El Dorado — watermelon and stone fruit candy; excellent late and dry-hop addition in juicy, high-gravity West Coast IPAs
