Instructions for Using the Alcohol By Volume Calculator

  1. Select Gravity Unit: Choose either “Specific Gravity (SG)” or “Degrees Plato (°P)” from the dropdown menu. Specific Gravity is commonly used by home brewers, while Plato is used more in professional brewing.
  2. Measure and Enter Original Gravity (OG):
    • The Original Gravity (OG) is the specific gravity or Plato value of your wort before fermentation begins. You can measure OG using a hydrometer or a refractometer.
    • Input the OG value in the provided field. If using Specific Gravity, it should look like “1.050”. For Plato, it might be around “12.0”.
  3. Measure and Enter Final Gravity (FG):
    • The Final Gravity (FG) is measured after fermentation is complete. It shows how much of the sugars have been converted to alcohol.
    • Measure FG with a hydrometer once fermentation has stopped, and enter the value in the field. Specific Gravity values are typically around “1.010”, while Plato values are lower, e.g., “3.0”.
  4. Click “Calculate ABV”: Press the button to calculate the alcohol by volume, apparent attenuation, and calories for a 375ml bottle.
  5. View Results: The calculator will display the ABV percentage, apparent attenuation, and other relevant results.
