Description

The Still Spirits Classic 8 Turbo Yeast 240g is the standalone yeast and nutrient component of the Classic 8 system — the same high-alcohol-tolerant, nutrient-supplemented turbo yeast that’s included in the Classic 8 Turbo Pack, sold without the mineral absorbents for distillers who already have their own post-fermentation treatment protocol. A 240g bag ferments either 8kg of turbo sugar in 25L for a high-ABV wash, or 6kg in 21L for a faster fermentation at a more moderate gravity. The yeast is designed for clean, rapid fermentation of sugar washes intended as spirit bases — producing a neutral, high-ABV ferment suitable for whiskey, vodka, rum, and gin base washes. In stock at Yeast Platform.

Classic 8 Turbo Yeast — Yeast Only vs Turbo Pack

The primary difference between the Classic 8 Turbo Yeast 240g and the Classic 8 Turbo Pack is that the Pack includes the mineral absorbent component for post-fermentation treatment of the finished wash. Mineral absorbents bind and remove higher alcohols and congeners from the wort before distillation, contributing to a cleaner distillate with less harsh head and tails fractions. If you’re purchasing the Turbo Yeast alone, you should have an equivalent post-fermentation treatment protocol — whether that’s a proprietary clearing product, activated carbon treatment, or an alternative congener-removal process — or you’re prepared to manage the additional congener load through careful distillation fractionation. Experienced distillers with an established process often prefer the standalone yeast for greater flexibility.

Fermentation Characteristics

Classic 8 Turbo Yeast is formulated for rapid, complete attenuation of sugar-wash fermentations at elevated gravity. At 25°C the yeast is typically active within a few hours of pitching and reaches terminal gravity in 3–7 days depending on the recipe gravity and ambient temperature. The nutrient package included in the 240g bag supports yeast health through the fermentation of high-sucrose or dextrose washes, which are nutrient-poor environments compared to grain-based wort. The yeast tolerates alcohol levels up to approximately 18% ABV before ethanol toxicity significantly impairs activity, making it suitable for maximum-extraction sugar wash recipes.

Still Spirits Classic 8 and Australian Home Distillers

Home distillation for personal use currently requires a licence in Australia — users should be familiar with the regulations in their state or territory before fermenting and distilling. The Classic 8 Turbo Yeast is designed for the controlled, repeatable production of a neutral high-ABV ferment base and is used by Australian home brewers for essence-based spirit production (which does not require a still), for legal distillation setups, or as preparation for a future legal-distillation setup. In stock at Yeast Platform for fast dispatch from our Australian warehouse.

Works Well With

  • Still Spirits Classic 8 Turbo Pack — the complete kit version; includes mineral absorbents for cleaner distillate if you don’t have your own post-fermentation treatment
  • Yeast Nutrient — supplement the included nutrients for very high-gravity washes or in hot Australian conditions where yeast stress increases nutrient demand
  • StellarClean PBW — clean your fermentation vessel thoroughly between spirit wash batches to avoid carryover contamination affecting the next wash
  • Carbonation Drops — if you also homebrew beer alongside your spirit wash operations, carbonation drops simplify the bottling side of your setup
